Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about using the resources for the I've got the power unit. If you need information or have a question about In the Zone in general, please view our help and support page, which answers some frequently asked questions about the project and the kits that were sent out to all UK schools in 2012. If you can't find the answer to your question, please contact us and we'll do our best to help.

  • QHow do I use the respirometer?

    A

    In the kit box you will find:

    • - 1 x 2-litre plastic bottle
    • - 6 x bungs
    • - 6 x lengths of hard tubing
    • - 6 x lengths of flexible tubing
    • - 5 mg of Bromothymol Blue
    • - mls of Sodium Hydroxide 0.1M
    • - 6 x pipettes

    You will need to supply 5 x 2-litre plastic bottles. Make up the bungs with the hard and plastic tubing.

    Carbon dioxide is acidic and will turn the bromothymol blue (green). If a known volume of sodium hydroxide is added before any carbon dioxide then you can get an estimation of how much carbon dioxide is breathed out because 2 molecules of sodium hydroxide is required to neutralise one molecule of carbon dioxide.

  • QHow do I use the pulse oximeter?

    A

    The pulse oximeter allows you to measure both blood O2 concentration and pulse rate.

    • - Press the function button on the front panel for about 1 second and release it immediately to turn on the oximeter. The oximeter automatically switches off when there is no signal for more than 8 seconds.
    • - Press the oximeter then insert one finger fully into the rubber hole before releasing the oximeter, the nail surface must be upward.
    • - Press the function button once on the front panel. Keep still while measurements are taken.

  • QHow do I use the blood pressure monitor?

    A

    WARNING: Great care must be taken not to over inflate the cuff as this hurts the student by leading to burst capillaries. Please refer to the manufacturer's instructions and page 108 of the Teaching Guide.

    Taking blood pressure

    • - Students should relax for 5 minutes before taking a reading.
    • - Press the START button. Students' average blood pressure reading will appear with the number of measurements stored in memory and a flashinginverted'V' symbol, indicating that monitor is ready for measurement.
    • - If the V symbol is displayed, the cuff has some air trapped in it. Press the exhaust valve button until the inverted 'V' symbol is displayed. You may have to press on the cuff while holding the exhaust valve to release all the air in the cuff.
    • - When the inverted 'V' symbol is displayed, begin cuff inflation by squeezing the inflator bulb repeatedly. It may take a few seconds for the symbol to appear.
    • - Stop squeezing the inflator bulb when the inverted 'V' symbol disappears or until cuff pressure reaches about 30 mmHg to 40 mmHg above expected systolic pressure.
    • - When the correct pressurization has been reached, the automatic exhaust mechanism will gradually reduce the pressure in the cuff. Sit quietly during measurement. The 'heart' symbol will blink with your pulse beat.
    • - If students wish to stop inflation at any time, they should press the exhaust valve to release the pressure in the cuff.
    • - After students see the measurement results displayed on the screen, they should press the exhaust valve to release the excess air from the cuff.
    • - If students move their arm before pressing the exhaust valve, the result on the screen will be deleted.
    • - The monitor shuts off automatically in about 30 seconds. Students can also press the START button to shut off the monitor.
    • - Allow at least 5 minutes between measurements on the same student.
  • QWhat results can I upload to the Live Data Zone?

    A

    16-19 year olds can upload their heart rate and blood pressure data from the experiments to the Live Data Zone and compare their results to other students across the UK.

Get In the Zone with Brazil 2014 and the Commonwealth Games!

After the huge success of London 2012 the sporting craze continues this summer with Brazil 2014 and, straight after the World Cup, we'll be hosting the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

What a great opportunity to get ahead of the games and use your In the Zone kit to bring some of the excitement of these major sporting events into your classroom. You can use the kit to help your pupils discover the science behind the performance of elite footballers like Wayne Rooney, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and what happens in the bodies of top athletes such as Usain Bolt and Mo Farrar when they push themselves to the limit in their quest for gold.
