Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about using the resources for the On your marks ... get set ... breathe unit. If you need information or have a question about In the Zone in general, please view our help and support page, which answers some frequently asked questions about the project and the kits. If you can't find the answer to your question, please contact us and we'll do our best to help.

Teaching 'On your marks ... get set ... breathe'

  • QHow do I use the pulse oximeter?

    A

    The pulse oximeter allows you to measure both blood O2 concentration and pulse rate.

    • - Press the function button on the front panel for about 1 second and release it immediately to turn on the oximeter. The oximeter automatically switches off when there is no signal for more than 8 seconds.
    • - Press the oximeter then insert one finger fully into the rubber hole before releasing the oximeter, the nail surface must be upward.
    • - Press the function button once on the front panel. Keep still while measurements are taken.

  • QHow do I use the lung volume bags?

    A

    The lung volume bag measures the capacity of the lungs.

    Assembly

    • - The lung volume bag and mouthpiece are for single person use only, so each student must use a new mouthpiece.
    • - Students should insert their mouthpiece halfway through the opening of the volume bag and secure it with a rubber band.
    • - While sitting, hold the bag on their knee students should press a paper towel against it to force the air out of the bag. They should start with the sealed end and push the air out toward the mouthpiece.
    • - Although disposable mouthpieces are being used it would be best if any students with colds either didn't use the bags or went last.

    Measuring Tidal Volume

    • - Students should take a normal breath in, hold their nose and take a normal breath out into the lung volume bag mouthpiece.
    • - Students should slide a paper towel along the bag to push all the air to the lower end and measure the volume of air it contains. (The bag has litre and 1/10 litre graduations.) Record this as tidal volume.
    • - Students should remove all the air from the lung volume bag by sliding the paper towel along its length.

    Measuring Vital Capacity

    • - Students should breathe in the largest breath possible, hold their nose and breathe out as much air as possible into the lung volume bag through their mouthpiece.
    • - Students should slide a paper towel along the bag to push all the air to the end and measure the volume of air it contains.
    • - Students can remove all the air from the lung volume bag by sliding the paper towel along its length.

  • QHow do I use the peak flow meters?

    A

    Peak Flow measurement is the measurement of the highest rate at which air can be expelled from the lungs through an open mouth.

    • - The peak flow meter and mouthpiece are for single person use only, so each student must use a new mouthpiece.
    • - Students should stand to take their readings.
    • - The indicator should be set to the zero before students take their readings.
    • - The peak flow meter should be held so that fingers are clear of the scale and slot.
    • - To measure peak flow students should take a deep breath in and place the peak flow meter in their mouth holding it horizontally and closing their lips around the mouthpiece.
    • - Students should blow as hard and fast as possible into the peak flow meter.
    • - Students should note the number on the scale indicated by the pointer.
    • - After taking the reading, students should return the pointer to zero and repeat the procedure twice more.

  • QWhat results can I upload to the Live Data Zone?

    A

    11-14 year olds can upload their lung volume, vital capacity and peak flow to the Live Data Zone and compare their results to other students across the UK.

Get In the Zone with Brazil 2014 and the Commonwealth Games!

After the huge success of London 2012 the sporting craze continues this summer with Brazil 2014 and, straight after the World Cup, we'll be hosting the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

What a great opportunity to get ahead of the games and use your In the Zone kit to bring some of the excitement of these major sporting events into your classroom. You can use the kit to help your pupils discover the science behind the performance of elite footballers like Wayne Rooney, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and what happens in the bodies of top athletes such as Usain Bolt and Mo Farrar when they push themselves to the limit in their quest for gold.

We're counting down to some exceptional sport at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and have enjoyed watching In the Zone's champion, Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, on Channel 4's 'The Jump'.
